THAT DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM

Efforts of the Egyptian Armed Forces to overcome the problem:-
- The Egyptian government has been actively committed to overcome the land mine problem , and has directed a large amount of resources and finance for the clearance operations carried out by its own assets . The results achieved have been substantial particularly within the context of the complexity of the problem , and other pressing requirements competing for resources within the country .
-Mine clearance operation have been conducted within Egypt by the Army Engineer Corps since the end of Second World War until the present time , allowing the military to develop significant experience in conducting such tasks , in support for both developmental and humanitarian needs . The Egyptian Engineers corps has successfully conducted mine clearance operation for 26 months in Kuwait at the conclusion of the 1991 Gulf crisis .
-The Egyptian Armed Forces have cleared a total area of 38,730 hectares out of which 2.976 million mines have been removed. That work took place from 1983 to 1999 and cost 27 million dollars borne by the state budget . The clearance work is summarized as follows.

The Armed Forces have the elements trained for mine clearance and UXO’s, however , they take financial assistance.Mine clearance operations in Western Desert have come to a stop since December 1999 due to lack of financial assistance.

Hardships and problems facing the clearance work:-
Lack of accurate records for the mine fields .
the Increasing sensitivity of the mines because they have been implanted for more than 50 y.
shifting of mines due to erosion and floods .
shifting of sand in some areas buried the mines and made some of them more than 2 meters deep .
some bombs were discovered with unexpected big caliber ,in some cases 2000 pounds .
High cost of mine clearance (1000$/hectare ) making the total cost of mine clearance of the infested area 250 million dollars;excluding salaries ,and accommodation for workers in the clearance operation (the international rate in 1997 was 1350 $ /hectare ,the cost here is reduced because the Armed forces carries it out ).
